You know where I stand on this subject…When the best artist don’t sell and Lil Wayne is actually able to say he is the best rapper alive and have record sales to back it up, and is actually getting that shit off…that is sad. I mean even the artist that were negative when we were younger actually had talent. I don’t blame NWA…I blame Master P and No Limit…he was the first to make all these drug dealers want to be rappers. I don’t think hip hop is dead…it’s just in remission…as EPMD put RAP is outta control.

I love this post. I maybe be young but my brother taught me early what is good and real. I have notice my cd collect basically becomes distant after 1998. I have become a avid byer of old school R&B now because I have given up on rap.

I think I’ll be done wirth this stuff in feive, ten years tops. I hope not. But as it is now, I only listen to five or six contemporary hip hop artists. Lupe/Kanye/Common/Little bother/Nas/Jay. Maybe a few others, but that’s about ti.

Great post, Homie, but I still subscribe to the fact that Hip Hop isn’t dead. Especially as long as there are those who rep it to the fullest. Your kwelis, your Mos Defs, your KRS Ones, your Dooms, your Commons, your PEs, your De Las, yourself, etc. As long as one stands up, the art is still there.

Now Rap as it is now, on the other hand, is dead and stinkin’! Outside of that.

Remember when De La felt they had to dumb down their style because people were asking, “What are they saying”? They STILL ripped it an people still didn’t get it. That’s when I started weeping for the masses.

Or how about when everybody rhymin’ about killin’, but nobody went to jail. Ok, Slick Rick, but he didn’t talk about it.

Like Public Enemy comes out and if you don’t sound like Chuck D and talk about uplifting Blacks and shutting down corporations you dont sale?
- I’ve always thought this was a shame. PE is still on of my fav groups.

Back then everyone was the same age…so the music made more sense because they were either talking about stuff that we could relate to, or was about to be able to relate to. That is the God honest truth.

Now, all we are being bombarded with is…bull ish on top of bull ish. No balance. No nothing. Just a flood of str8 garbage.

Some songs are decent, but nowhere near the Golden Age of the music.

I also agree, we, the consumer, can stop it.

Well, I am such a fiend for hip hop that I remember the Skinny boys….lol

I cannot get off of this topic because it is so dear to me. I grew up on real hip hop and today’s artists simply are not into intellectual wordsmithing.

I just listened to Big Gip from Goodie Mob discussing the state of hip hop today and he is one of the reasons why hip hop will not die. He put it like this, the artists of the today are the crack babies of the 80′s who really don’t have a good point of reference, with 30 year old grandmother’s….lol…..and they aren’t into reading/learning/evolving and discussing relevant and ish…..and they would rather die with more money than respect…..
